TASTING: Single Varietal - Grenache

Grenache, Garnatxa, Canonau, Alicante…whatever you want to call it! There are almost as many names for this grape as there are ways to make it and enjoy it.

Tonight we will open Grenache from around the world - both reds and whites! By tasting these bottles side-by-side we can experience the similarities and differences with a bit more acuity to see how much the place and winemaker influence each bottle.

Trust me, this tasting will not be boring - I aim to highlight why, when you step outside of your expectations of ‘what wine is supposed to be’ , you enter a whole realm of character, expression and delightful variation.

Diego's Picks: Chausse Selections

Chausse Selections is a relative newcomer to the Seattle market, ipso-facto many of the wines in this portfolio are also new!! Diego Sheridan, however, has been kicking around the area in wholesale and retail for a few years now, hailing from institutions like McCarthy & Shiering, and hot spots like Other World.

Don’t let his blazing good looks fool you, his depth of knowledge is vast and so today I give Diego the reigns to pour his selection of wines from the Chausse portfolio. If you are curious to deep-dive into the world of low-intervention wines (most of these wines are zero sulfur) this is the tasting for you. No real structure, just some of Diego’s favorites!

Jared's Picks: Kily Import

Y’all know me, the retailer, and you know there is a winemaker who produces the wine…but betwixt us is a whole system of distribution that is so, so important! These are the importers, distributors and sales people who work behind the scenes to make sure we have the bottles that we want, the information that we need and the wine gears stay well-oiled all year ‘round.

Jared, of Kily Import, is one of my guardian angels who juggles orders, procures fulfillments and has a ton of information about each of the producers and the hundreds of wines that pass through their warehouse every vintage. Today I hand my wine key, and bank account, over to Jared to select ANY of his favorite wines from the Kily portfolio to taste!!

No rules, just Jared’s picks - maybe we’ll open some sleeper wines that have been quietly aging in the corner of the warehouse…maybe new releases that just landed and are utterly crushable…classic go-to’s or wild experimentals? I guess we’ll find out. I do know that Jared knows some things that we don’t know…you know?

From 1-7pm Griffin Salisbury, aka 5tinyknives, will be in the shop offering flash tattoos from an array of original wine and non-wine related art.

Griffin is the talented graphic designer behind my IMPERFETTA logo, neon sign and the LOVE YOU stickers you may have seen around. He’s a self-taught tattoo artist entering his third year of tattooing, we thought it would be fun to throw-down some ink!

Here’s how it’s going to work:

Shop opens at noon with a sign-up sheet

Griffin will start at 1pm and see individuals one-by-one from the sheet for single flash tats until 7pm (they usually take about 20 min each)

Tattoo fees are paid directly to Griffin - BRING CASH - pricing between $80-120 (and tips are always appreciated).

WINEMAKER SHORTY TAKEOVER w/Fossil & Fawn

Jenny Mosbacher and Jim Fischer of Oregon winery Fossil & Fawn are in Seattle and I managed to steal them away for a SHORTY TAKEOVER!!

Not your traditional tasting…it’s way more fun! Shorty pours (3oz) only for $7 each

In their own words:

“We aren't too interested in bold manifestos or style declarations - our goal is to make wines that we like. We've found that the kind of wines we like, and thus the wines we make, are executed with a natural approach that allows the vineyard to do the talking. The minimalist, natural approach is a nice way of saying we do things the hard way, by-hand. Wines that have acidity, structure, and balance that will brilliantly compliment dinner tonight, or be a worthy reward for patience after a few years in the cellar.“

WINE TASTING: Mexican Wines w/Beso Imports

Join me and Beso Imports next Thursday from 5-7pm to taste a handful of DELICIOUS wines from our neighbors to the south!!

In my opinion, the low-intervention wine production in Mexico has come a looong way in the last decade. Right now Beso offers the most extensive portfolio of Mexican wines available in the US, working with wineries in the states of Baja Norte, Guanajuato, and Queretaro…and growing.

As awareness and recognition of Mexican wine increases, as does the variety in style and technique, Beso Imports is leading the curve with an emphasis on estates that farm sustainably, organically and make wine expressive of their place. Some wines are raw and delightfully biological, others clean and streamlined - all are honest, filled with character and damn tasty!

Here’s the deets…

Shawn is my guest winespert and founder of Joyous Society distribution. Today she’s pouring the wines of Domain de Majas, one of our long-time favorite producers in the Côtes Catalanes region of France. These wines are expertly made and deceivingly simple - meaning they are very easy to drink, but somehow capture an energy and nuance that is hard to describe. Fact: It is scientifically impossible for an American to pronounce Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes (where Domaine de Majas is located) correctly.

MAJAS TASTING: 4-6:30pm, $15 tasting fee

We will hit play at 7pm so please arrive early to grab your drinks and find your seat.

WINEMAKER TASTING: Rootdown Wine

This is the first time Rootdown Wines have been in WA - but Mike Lucia is no newcomer to the CA wine scene, he’s been kicking around Sonoma since the early 90’s. Mike harvests to let the wines lead with earth and texture, rather than only fruit. Stylistically, these wines have low alcohol, high acid and more delicate, brighter color. His style remains very decidedly hands-off, allowing the grapes and specific sites to speak for themselves. He ferments the wines with native yeasts, no new oak, and sulfur only in amounts equal to what is found naturally on the vine.

Tonight we’ll have ALL of his wines open. to try! The playful Es Okay? bottles and the Rootdown single vineyard Savagnin and Trousseau.

WINE TASTING: PortoVino w/ Guest Winespert

For almost two decades PortoVino Imports has been traveling Italy’s backroads to create a portfolio of compelling wines that both excite, and express unique areas and growers!! Today I share my wine key with Hallie, our Italian winepspert from PortoVino. Hallie knows the wines and producers inside-out (cuz she goes out to find them!) and will pour with me all eve!!

FROM THE IMPORTER: “We represent iconic traditional growers and the edgy outliers. All are family wineries that don’t use synthetic chemicals in the vineyards, and follow a minimal intervention approach in the cellar. Most are certified organic or biodynamic; all are growers who care about soil health and madre natura. From the beginning, we have been seeking out wines with terroir – the soul or anima of the place and people they come from.”

WINE TASTING: The New Washington

It’s a common question: Do you carry any Washington wines??

And the answer is often ‘no’ because of the organic and low-intervention parameters that we work within (there isn’t much in WA, the vast majority of farming is conventional). But that’s slowly changing with this crop of young, adventurous winemakers!

The list is still being refined, but we will have open bottles from a handful of producers that are prioritizing clean farming, native yeast ferments and minimal intervention (Sage Rat, Esja, Upsidedown, etc). Taste the future of WA wine!
